The Caviar does look like it comes with a better drive unit.IMPORTANT – READ CAREFULLY. Does that even have an eSATA connection? Does it accept that format? And does the WD Caviar accept a USB connection? Can I even use this with my current setup? If I can pull this off, then it does seem like quite a decent option.

I should note that my PC is a Dell pentium 4 with Windows XP. I would love to get a better-quality drive for the same price or less than the My Book Essential models. Exactly how hard of a project are we talking about here? I honestly don't know if this is even something I could handle doing myself, but I guess it depends on how difficult this is going to be for a novice like me to accomplish.

It didn't occur to me that you could install it in an aftermarket external enclosure (like the one you posted a link to).

So my question is, since I don't plan on using the pre-installed backup software that comes with the Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB model, should I buy the Western Digital Elements 1TB drive instead (since it does not come with any pre-installed backup software)? Does that have the same drive (with the same quality) as the My Book Essential 1TB model? The Elements drive goes for less money, so if it does have basically everything that the My Book has, minus the backup software (and maybe a little more portability), then wouldn't that model be the better choice for me? That said, I should note that I haven't read many reviews on the Elements model (which is part of the reason I'm posting this thread).Ĭlick to expand.I thought about that but I figured that it wouldn't be good for me since I'm not very computer-savvy, or technically-proficient when it comes to computers.Īt first, I thought that this was a drive that you would switch-out with the original inside the PC (installing it INSIDE my PC's enclosure).

My PC's HD is already overloaded as it is (with music files), and plus I plan on adding a lot more music in the future, so I will be needing the extra space regardless. I'm really only buying an external HD so I can take the strain off of my Dell PC's internal drive (by transferring all of the music to the external drive). Do I even need backup software (that comes pre-installed in the drive) if I'm not planning on using it? For backups, I plan on making CD-R copies of the music I transfer onto the external HD(Most, if not all companies make you pay to use that backup software anyway). When looking at the various drives out there, one of the biggest "cons" that people mentioned was issues with the backup software.

Before I make a final decision, I have one more question. I posted a thread on which external hard drive I should buy with my budget of $120, and most people recommended the Western Digital drives (specifically the My Book models).
